Requirements

Moving to the UK to teach can be a thrilling and rewarding experience, but it's important to understand the requirements and processes involved.

Education and Qualifications

To work as a teacher in the UK, US teachers will need to hold a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited university or college. In addition, they must have a teaching qualification that is recognized in the UK, such as Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

US teachers who hold a teaching qualification that is not recognized in the UK may need to take additional courses or exams to ensure their qualifications are equivalent.

Job Offer and Sponsorship

To obtain a visa to work in the UK, US teachers must have a job offer from a UK school that is registered as a sponsor by the Home Office. iCan Teach UK can assist US teachers in finding schools that are looking for candidates with their specific qualifications and experience, and help with the application process.

Criminal Records Check

To work in the UK as a teacher, US teachers will need to undergo a criminal records check. This involves obtaining a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which will disclose any criminal convictions or cautions.

English Language Proficiency

US teachers may need to demonstrate their proficiency in English, depending on their qualifications and the requirements of the school. This may involve taking an English language test, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Visa and Documentation

US teachers will need to obtain the appropriate visa to work in the UK, which can be a complex and time-consuming process. iCan Teach UK can help guide US teachers through the visa process and provide assistance with documentation and paperwork.

The type of visa that US teachers would need to obtain to work in the UK as a teacher would depend on the specific circumstances of their employment. However, in most cases, US teachers would need to obtain a Tier 2 (General) visa, which is designed for skilled workers who have a job offer from a UK employer.

To obtain a Tier 2 (General) visa, US teachers would need to meet certain requirements, such as having a valid certificate of sponsorship from a UK employer, proving their knowledge of English, and showing that they have enough money to support themselves while in the UK. The visa application process can be complex and time-consuming, but iCan Teach UK can help guide US teachers through the process and provide support and assistance every step of the way.

iCan Teach UK Support

Relocating to a new country can be overwhelming, but iCan Teach UK is here to help. We offer support and guidance throughout the entire process, including visa assistance, help with finding suitable accommodations, and ongoing support throughout the relocation process.

What types of roles are available?

Permanent or Fixed Term Contracts

The majority of teachers from the USA will come to the UK on a Tier 2 Visa, meaning that you will only be able to work for one employer on either a Permanent or Fixed Term Contract.

This would mean that you are employed directly by the employer, either on a permanent contract (with no end date) or on a Fixed Term Contract (for a specific period of time, usually between 1 and 2 years). The task of finding the right vacancy, completing application forms and submitting CVs can feel like a full-time job in itself. Our excellent relationships with schools and MATs throughout the country means that we can help you find the perfect role in the UK

Long Term Supply

(Only available to candidates who are not sponsored on Tier 2)

Long-term supply allows you to work on an ongoing basis in one school. This can vary from a few weeks, a term, or even a full year. These roles can often be to cover sickness, parental leave or because an unexpected vacancy has arisen for other reasons. Long-term supply can often lead to the offer of a permanent role and allows you to experience teaching in a variety of settings, ensuring that you can see how each school operates, and make sure that if you do decide to take a permanent role the one you select is the right place for you.

Day2Day Supply

(Only available to candidates who are not sponsored on Tier 2)

If you are looking for a role that gives you more of a work-life balance and mostly requires no planning - then supply teaching may be for you. It offers that flexibility so you can work around other commitments. It also affords you the opportunity to gain more experience in numerous settings and schools. Sometimes it is daunting accepting a permanent role right away - supply teaching allows you to get the feel for the school and can lead to a longer-term contract if that is what you are looking for. Through daily supply, you can ensure you are finding the perfect role for you.
