How to Get QTS as an Overseas Trained Teacher in 2026
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is the professional certification required to teach in most state-funded schools in England. For overseas trained teachers, getting QTS is a crucial step in establishing your teaching career in the UK.
The New QTS Application Route
Since February 2023, the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) has offered a streamlined application route for overseas teachers. This allows experienced teachers from around the world to apply for QTS without needing to complete additional training in the UK.
To be eligible, you typically need at least one year of post-qualification teaching experience and qualifications equivalent to a UK degree and teacher training.
Required Documents
You'll need to provide certified copies of your teaching qualifications, evidence of your teaching experience, an English language proficiency certificate (such as IELTS), and a letter of professional standing from the authority that recognised you as a teacher in your home country.
Timeline and Support
Applications are typically assessed within 8–12 weeks. iCan Teach UK supports all our candidates through the QTS process, helping with document preparation and liaising with the TRA on your behalf.
